ESA Part III: Protections for endangered whales reinstated
Finally, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia granted a preliminary injunction that reinstates rules that protect critically endangered right whales, humpbacks and fin whales from deadly entanglements in fishing gear. A 2007 lawsuit against the National Marine Fisheries Service aimed to force the NMFS to publish modifications to fishing gear regulations designed to protect endangered whales. The government agreed to issue regulations, but delayed implementation of a key requirement that would protect whales from floating groundlines on lobster and crab pots that pose a risk of entanglement.
