Valrico couple prevails over county in fight for pit bull

St. Pete Times breaking news blog reports on a case involving a seven-year old pit bull named Kane, who Hillsborough County Animal Services wanted to euthanize after the dog bit a gas meter reader, tore a dogcatcher's pants and bit a veterinarian's assistant. The hearing officer found there was conflicting testimony and that Kane was entitled to the benefit of the doubt. Nevertheless, the hearing officer cautioned that "Kane's owners should be more judicious and more rigorous with their interpretation (of the) laws of this state and with the local dangerous dog statutes. Their continued callous indifference to and loose interpretation of the laws of this state and the local dangerous dog statutes will only get the dog Kane in trouble again and most likely back in the same predicament that is the subject of these hearings." The hearing officer also ordered the couple to pay about $2,000 for the county's costs for impounding and caring for Kane.
