Rare Black Bob Cat Found

WPTV has this story on the capture of a rare black bobcat, which may explain earlier reports of black panthers. After killing a pet turkey, the bobcat was captured and taken to the Busch Wildife Sanctuary. Deron Hartman with the sanctuary notes that less than a dozen black bobcats have been recorded. After DNA testing and documentation, the sanctuary plans to return the black Bobcat to the wild.

My parents found a deceased black bobcat in their backyard early this morning. They believe that the large cat was attempting to hunt one of their dogs. The cat scaled a fairly tall fence to access the backyard. We plan to call Animal Control to see if they want to collect the carcus. We plan to photograph, weigh, and measure the cat before we bury it. He's beautiful. It's so sad that we did not have the opportunity to see him while he was alive.

This is the second time we have spotted a black bobcat in our backyard. We are in the Brandon/Riverview area and I never thought I would spot it here since this area is very urban with a mall 5 minutes away.

I saw one a couple years ago while hiking in a local forest canyon, and I live in California. It stopped and we stared at each other. I wouldn't say it was jet black, but nieither was it the tabby-like coloring of most bobcats; this thing was DARK. I'd call it black.

Last night we were awaken to our cat fighting in the lanai. We believe it was a black bobcat. It had made a four inch slice in the screen and attacked our cat. There was fur everywhere which appeared to be from our cat. Our cat sustained multiple wounds and areas of missing patches of fur. My wife showed off the other animal. We did not know that these existed until we researched it on the Internet. We live in n area in st lucie county where the black bobcat has been spotted over the years.
